Freelance Writing: Do You Know What Freelance Writing Is?

When you do freelance writing you sell your work to someone who pays used to write, when you do freelance writing often you’re considered to be self employed.

There is hardly anywhere that you can look without seeing the written word. Even with the most amazing advancements in technology people are still needed to write. Even though writing is such a critical part to a lot of types of business, very few of them employ full-time people to do it. Most of these places rely on freelance writers to do the work for them.

One of the most well-known forms of freelance writing is often referred to as ghost writing. Ghost writers are most often known for penning celebrity autobiographies. The prestige and money the ghost writer makes for writing a celebrity autobiography are well worth the effort. However, most people don’t even know the name of the ghost writer.

The news media is another place that relies heavily on freelance writing but most people aren’t aware of this fact. In the old days, most news media outlets employed an army of reporters ready to go just about anywhere at any time if a story suddenly broke. Today, the news media doesn’t have to employ large amounts of reporters, they rely on freelance reporters to get the scoop on anything that is newsworthy when it occurs, and they buy these stories from the freelance reporter. There is a lot of money to be made in freelance reporting and if a freelance reporter teams up with a freelance photographer or cameraman they can make even more money for their story.

We are all familiar with book shops. Book shops sell the work, almost exclusively, of freelance writers. Fiction is the biggest market for freelancers and the one which many try to break into before they realise that they are not very well prepared. Non fiction is a large field, too, but getting into that takes a little more effort and a lot of luck. It is very difficult to present existing knowledge in a new and refreshing way and almost impossible, as an unknown quantity, to get a new non fiction book published.

Freelance writing is easy to break into, especially if you start with local newspapers or magazines. These two mediums rely very heavily on the work of freelance writers; their editors are always looking for fresh talent. Also, it is easy to get into freelance writing by writing for people who own websites. People who own websites are often looking to hire people to provide unique and interesting content for their websites.

This can be an easier market to break into because it tends to be easier to discover who to talk to and what to write about and there aren’t many freelance writers for them who write more than 500 - 600 word articles. The publications are looking for content, not new pages.

Freelance writing is a way to earn some good income, if you are willing to work at it and put in some effort to gain financial rewards.
