A Quick History On African American Authors From 21 Black Street

Beginning in the 60’s with the civil rights movement, African American authors were rising in the market. Before America was a nation there were African Americans authors when published black writers were slaves and abolitionists.

Phillis Wheatley was the first to make her mark in the African American writer community. As a child and sold in Boston to the Wheatleys, she did not speak any English when she arrived. However under the teachings of her owners she was able to conquer the English language. In 1773 as a slave she published several poems on various subjects. It took almost another 100 years for another African American to get any kind of major publication. In 1845 Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass was the next. After Douglas escaped slavery for the second time the book was published. Soon thereafter the American Civil War started, this opened the door for new educational freedom for African Americans.

The turn of the 20th century brought African American book clubs, and a new black culture where books were shared in these informal book clubs. An intellectual debate began between Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois on how African Americans can better could better themselves.

At the turn of the 21st century, another kind of change to the publishing world from every age including child targeted to adult eBooks, ingenuous metaphors on culture and race identity. When it comes to certain markets the Internet has changed publishing for African Americans. There has been a journey from African American book clubs to eBooks. Education advances in the 20th century led to expanded black cultural awareness across America. Early African American literature was often political or spiritual in nature when published African American authors were slaves and abolitionists but the first published book by an African American was the poetry of Phillis Wheatley.

African American authors looking to be published are exploring the internet black eBook industry where the African American Literature eBook niche market is thriving even in this difficult economy.

Any search shows that poets, fiction, novels, advice, history and adult eBooks are plentiful which means African American Literature is not just a book case in your local library.
