5 Deadly Mistakes In Affiliate Marketing.

If you think that only the novices have problems with affiliate marketing, think again. You’d be surprised to learn that many experienced individuals are by no means immune from making the same mistakes and bad decisions that ruin their progress.

Mistake #1: Preparing Someone Else’s List

How can you create someone else’s list at your own cost? Well, this is exactly what you do when you send clients directly to your website without recording their information.

This is the job of the squeeze page. A squeeze page records both the names and e-mail addresses of all those who’ve visited your website, thereby building you an invaluable opt-in list of interested (and pre-sold) individuals who you can contact in the future to sell other products and/or services you may have. Who better to approach about any offers you have, than to those who’ve already shown an interest?

Mistake #2: Ignoring Your Prospects.

How can you let go of people who purchased something from you? You MUST follow up with your contacts. After all, you’ve spent your precious time and put in effort in finding quality clients for your affiliate marketing site. You can’t let that be the end of it.

Following up with your prospects could involve posting newsletters, having them read your articles or free reports, or sending them updated information about your products and services. Keep in mind here that you don’t want to stalk your prospects. You simply want to keep them “in the loop” by staying in contact with them.

Mistake #3: Being Too Aggressive With Your Prospects.

The one thing you don’t want to do is attempt to make a sale the first time. It’s a nice thing to have happen, but statistically, the odds of you making a sale the very first time are not very good. It usually takes 3 to 5 (sometime more) exposures of your product or service for most people to respond to your offer. Why? One reason could be that people want to be sure you’re a legitimate enterprise, because companies come and go all the time. Secondly, the more they’re exposed to your product or service, the more confidence they’ll have that this is not some sort of “fly-by-night,” “here today, gone tomorrow”, type of thing.

You don’t want to appear desperate, or pushy by asking your clients “Why haven’t you purchased my product(s) yet?” Or, “What are you waiting for?” It’s up to the customer to decide when (or if) (s)he will purchase your product. By appearing to be pushy or anxious for your customer to buy from you, you may very well alienate that person. No one wants to buy from someone who’s desperate. People like to buy things, but they don’t like to be sold. They don’t want to feel like they’re being manipulated or forced into a buying decision. When someone is ready to buy, they’ll sell themselves.

Mistake #4: Sending Multiple Offers In One Mailing.

Are you teaching your prospects multi-tasking? When they’ve asked for information about your products, it’s required that you send them ONLY the required information. Clubbing multiple facts together may confuse your client, and (s)he may drop the idea of associating with you altogether.

Mistake #5: Advertising Several Affiliate Programs At Once.

Can you date 5 women at a time? No. (We won’t argue with those who attempt to say “Yes”; but this is marketing guys, not dating!) The best way to become successful is to concentrate on one affiliate program at a time. Get loads of experience, dexterity, and money from one program and then think of expanding your venture.

If you’re guilty of committing any one (or more) of these mistakes, there is indeed hope for you. As long as you take corrective action as quickly as possible before your business suffers from it.

I am amazed at how many easily prevented mistakes happen when we start a business. It happens all the time to big corporations and small businesses everywhere. One book that I would suggest any serious business entrepreneur to read is “Deadly Decisions” by Chris Burns. Deadly Decisions offers not just questions, but answers. How did these mistakes get made, and what can we learn from them?
